Preventing Teenage Pregnancy

If you are the parent of a teenage girl, you need to educate her so that she doesn't become a statistic. Teenage pregnancy rates in the United States are higher than any other Country in the world. There are many reasons why this is the case. There is sex all around us, in the media, in movies, in print and even in schools, there is peer pressure, kids aren't being educated in various forms of birth control and teenage girls are becoming more developed at younger and younger ages. All of these factors combined result in more and more kids having kids. When a teenager becomes pregnant, she must drop everything to take care of her new baby. That means she may have to put her education on hold and this could have repercussions on the rest of her life. So you must teach her the causes of teenage pregnancy and you must instill in her that she must respect her body, who she is and she must think of the outcomes of her actions before she acts on her urges and whims.

Sexual Education

One of the best ways to prevent teenage pregnancy is to educate the child with sexual education. Sex ed will teach your child how a woman becomes pregnant, what changes the body goes through, the various forms of contraception and also ways to avoid peer pressure when your teen feels pressured into having sex. If your child's school doesn't offer sexual education then it is your job as a parent to offer that sex ed in your home. Remember that this isn't something you should feel embarrassed about. If you hold off your sex conversations with your teen, then you run the risk of your child engaging in risky behavior, thus resulting in teenage pregnancy.

Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is an extremely powerful force. No matter how educated your teen is, if her friends or that really attractive boy at school pressures her to have sex, this can cause her to give in. The result could be teenage pregnancy and it could also lead to an STD or both. So make sure you teach your child how to avoid peer pressure, give her things to say so that she can remain strong and also make sure you describe the various situations she may find herself in when peer pressure will seem the strongest, such as at parties.

If you talk to your teen and you teach her how to be strong and how to avoid sex, or at least to be safe, you will help her avoid teenage pregnancy so she can keep her future open.
