Latest Treatment on Prostate Cancer

American men who are living with prostrate cancer can now choose from the array of treatment including the latest treatment on prostate cancer. However, there is no known best treatment that fits for every body. Cancer treatment varies form one patient to the other while considering the patient's age, severity of the prostate cancer, presence of other diseases and logically the financial capacity of the patient or the significant other s to shoulder the cost of any chosen treatment, and that includes even the latest treatment on prostate cancer.

The standard treatment of prostate cancer includes radiotherapy, surgery, hormone therapy and drug therapy. All these are all available for the patients living with prostate cancer to choose from. With the emergence of the latest treatment on prostrate cancer, the treatment filed has widened giving more options to all patients.

The latest treatment on prostate cancer, which is considered to be less invasive, includes brachytherapy and cryotherapy. These treatments are not generally recommended as the "best prostate cancer treatment", however research shows that these treatments could be better options than the other treatments on prostate cancer.

Brachytherapy works in the same principle with external radiotherapy although the difference is that this medical procedure works from the inside where the prostate is actually located. This prostate cancer treatment is done with the use of "radioactive seeds" that looks exactly like rice grains. The seeds are inserted to the prostate region via the perineum, the skin that connects the scrotum and the anus.

The doctor makes an incision on the perineum after the anesthesia is injected and let the needle bearing the radioactive seeds pass through. A transrectal ultrasound is utilized to guide the needle for the proper placement of the seed implant to the prostate and the affected tissues. Once the implants are securely attached to the prostate, they are expected to irradiate the prostate, thus killing the malignant cells destroying it.

Cryotherapy as the name suggests is a treatment that utilizes extremely cold substance or ice. This procedure is meant to destroy the malignant tumors eating up the prostate of the patient by freezing. A very fine and thin needle is inserted to the perineum. With the use of a cryogenic machine where the needle is attached, doses of ice balls are produced from the needles enough to freeze the prostate. The known side effect of this procedure is impotence since it will also destroy the prostrate in the process.

This prostate cancer treatment is an option for patients who are evading invasive major surgery like radical prostatectomy. Patients who also shy away from the possible risks of another treatment such as watchful waiting can have cryotherapy as an alternative.

The latest treatment on prostate cancer is expected to double in number as many treatments are still under clinical trials. Patients can only hope that all these are affordable.
