Prostate Cancer Treatment

Prostate cancer is cause by the growth of abnormal cells that form a mass on the prostate called malignant tumor. Prostate cancer attacks the ageing population of men. In the U.S., the disease has affected men over 65 years old, which accounted 75% of the total number of cases. When this degenerating disease affects a man, immediate prostate cancer treatment should be sought.

The National Cancer Institute has listed several standard prostate cancer treatments along with new treatments that are still on clinical trials.

Watchful Waiting in short is monitoring the patient's health, waiting for other symptoms to occur while cancer is still in its early stage. Treatment like drugs or surgery are still not given until clear signs re determined thus, proper course of action are also being identified.

Surgery is an invasive method of treating prostate cancer and could be expensive too. There are different types of surgeries available today, however not all are applicable to all patients. Pelvic lymphadenectomy is a surgical process that removes the lymph nodes from the pelvis. The lymph nodes are examined for the presence of malignant tumors that might affect the prostate. Radical prostatectomy is a procedure that medically removes the prostate, the seminal vesicles, and other tissue surrounding the gland. The surgery could either be retropubic that slices the abdominal area, or perineal that makes an incision in the perineum.

Other surgery is the transurethral resection. This medical procedure is accomplished with the use of a resectoscope (this is a lighted gadget with bladed attachment) inserted into the urethra. This procure is suitable for patients who may not be fit to undergo radical prostatectomy because of the patient's age or the presence of other illness.

Radiation therapy is one of the most common treatments of cancer and prostate cancer for that matter. Exposing the patient to radiation in killing the cancer cells using a machine is the external type while the internal type is letting the patient by injecting radioactive substance in to the patient.
Hormonal replacement therapy is meant to decrease the production of hormone that generates cancer cell growth. These hormones are used to inhibit the hormone from producing. Hormones like antiandrogen and estrogen are commonly used in this treatment.

Prostate cancer treatment is a case-to-case basis. It depends on the stage of the cancer that hit the prostate and the age of the patient. Prostate cancer treatment could be invasive depending on the degree of the cancer while there others are not. Prostate cancer treatment more often than not is costly. The burden of the disease can take a toll of the financial capability of the patient and his family. Any prostate cancer treatment could be effective depending on how the patient's body responds to it.
