A Guide To Prostate Gland

Prostate is a gland of the size of a walnut, responsible for making and storing semen. Semen is the fluid that carries sperm, and this fluid protects the sperms from acidity in the vagina during ejaculation. At birth, this gland is of the size of a pea, and grows as big as the size of a walnut by the adulthood.

Prostate gland is located in front of rectum and below the bottom of bladder. It also surrounds urethra, which carries the urine from the body. Enlargement of prostate gland can cause serious urinary problems due to its location in the body. Infection or tumor can cause the swelling of the prostate that causes urination problem by constricting the urethra.

Prostate Gland Enlargement

Prostate gland enlargement is medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is however not a forerunner to prostate gland cancer. There is a phase of prostate growth when men are in their mid 40s. During this phase, there is a rapid reproduction of the cells in the central portion, resulting in enlargement of prostate gland. Due to tissue enlargement, the urethra gets compressed, and blocks the urine flow partially.

Treatment of prostate gland enlargement depends on the signs and symptoms, and may include simple medications to treat it or surgery to remove it. Enlargement of prostate gland in not always a problem, and is noticeable in only about 50% of the men. Some of the common signs and symptoms of prostate gland enlargement are weak urine stream, dribbling at the end of urination, straining while urinating, urgent need to urinate, increased frequency of urination, inability to completely empty the bladder, urinary tract infection and blood in the urine.

Prostate Gland Removal

Prostate gland removal or prostatectomy is a surgical procedure performed to treat the prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. Prostate gland is found only in males, and all or part of it is removed during the surgery.

Impotency and incontinency are most common complication of prostatectomy. After the removal of prostate gland, due to retrograde ejaculation, the ejaculation will be dry, but experience of orgasm remains unaffected.

Any problem related to prostate gland requires medical attention, but additionally, detoxification of all the elimination organs can also be quite helpful. These organs include digestive system, kidney, intestines and liver.

Prostate massage is used in many countries where doctor or nurse massages the prostate for few minutes by inserting a finger into the rectum. One should not feel embarrassed, as prostate problems can be quite serious if not handled timely. During massage, black waste may come out of the gland, and more massages may be required to remove all the toxins.
