Heart Trauma Information

Heart trauma is a very serious injury and can result in years of trauma therapy to completely repair. Trauma to the heart is one of the most serious injuries that can be seen because the heart is pivotal to human survival. Blunt injury to the aorta that actually causes the heart to tear is probably the most serious of all heart traumas, but other heart trauma can be very serious as well.

Heart Trauma Basics

In the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus, the Egyptians were the very first to ever describe heart and aorta trauma. This was written more than five thousand years ago. Back then, there were not any successful treatments or surgeries to repair heart trauma. Today, a patient with a trauma to the heart needs immediate surgical intervention. The surgeon must be highly skilled and have perfect surgical technique. In addition, the patient must have top notch postoperative care as well. In addition, the patient will need meticulous assessments and managements because heart trauma is often times difficult to diagnose. When the trauma is diagnosed immediately, survival rates are relatively high. Yet because the problem is so very difficult to diagnose, mortality is high. Many cases are misdiagnosed or not even diagnosed until autopsy. When the trauma victim is below the age of forty, the mortality rate is even higher because many surgeons and emergency room doctors do not even think to look for a heart problem.

Heart trauma also has a high rate of secondary issues and complications. It is more common to see a heart injury with other injuries than simply a heart injury on its own. This is another reason why they are so difficult to diagnose. The more apparent problem can often times distract from the inner heart trauma. Complications can also occur due to poor management of the initial heart trauma. Paraplegia is a complication that can occur due to mismanagement of a heart trauma.

Heart Trauma Diagnosis

Some heart traumas can result in instantaneous death. Others, however, can be diagnosed and treated. The most important thing to do when you are injured and suspect a heart trauma is to get yourself to a hospital as soon as possible. If you are in an accident and are brought by ambulance, chances are you will be rushed to the hospital and the surgeons and doctors will begin treatment immediately. This is imperative to surviving trauma to the heart. Immediate diagnosis and treatment is crucial to a high survival rate. With proper management and care, many heart traumas are fixable.
