Reasons To Take Vitamin Supplements

Are you one of those people that refuse to take vitamin supplements because you think that they are a waste of money? Well you could be right, but you are probably wrong. If you consistently have a perfectly balanced diet that comprises all of the essential micronutrients that your body requires for healthy functioning then there is absolutely no need for you to take vitamin supplements. How many people do you know that eat a nutritionally balanced diet every day?

Avoid Malnutrition

It is a good idea to take vitamin supplements if you wish to avoid malnutrition. When you think of the word ‘malnutrition’ you probably envision underfed children in developing countries. It certainly isn’t a word that is often associated with countries in North America where there is a massive problem with obesity. In fact even a person who happens to be significantly overweight can have malnutrition. An individual who lives off a diet of junk food and candy does not get many of the vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients contained in fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, lean fish and whole grains. Do not imagine you are immune to malnutrition if you are slim or of normal weight either, especially if you diet on a regular basis. Fad diets that comprise avoiding certain food groups can also lead to micronutrient deficiencies.

What kind of impact can micronutrient deficiencies have on the human body? Malnutrition can lead to all manner of health issues and diseases. Scurvy, rickets, anemia, beriberi, vision loss, brittle bones and reduced immunity to viruses and infections are just a few of the problems that vitamin and mineral deficiencies can cause. If you want to avoid malnutrition and you do not eat a well-balanced diet then the solution is to take vitamin supplements each day.

Other Benefits

When you first start taking vitamin supplements you probably won’t notice any immediate beneficial effects. However over time you will notice that you have more energy than you once did and that you haven’t been bothered by minor ailments such as coughs and colds for ages. You will also notice that you no longer have any food cravings. When your body has everything needed for each internal process to work efficiently you will feel strong and well. You will be able to metabolize your food properly and fight all manner of minor ailments. Your skin, hair, nails and eyes will look great. The antioxidant effect of the vitamins will also help to protect your body against the onset of serious health issues such as hypertension, type two diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.

How To Purchase Them

What kind of vitamin supplements should you purchase? The answer to that question depends on your gender and age group. The best vitamin supplements for a sixty year old woman will not be the same as the most suitable product for a twenty year old male. When you are buying vitamin supplements look for a good quality product that is suitable for your age and sex. Avoid cheap vitamin supplements as they can be less effective, especially if they contain filler products such as sand. You should also avoid vitamin supplements that contain more nutrients than you need. It is possible to have too much of a good thing and some vitamins are poisonous when taken to excess.
