Understanding Female Hormone Replacement

Menopause is a phase in woman’s life when her periods stop, and it is a normal part of aging process. Effects of female hormones can be quite drastic, distinguishing them from males. Few years before, and during the period of menopause, the female hormonal level fluctuates, causing vaginal dryness and hot flashes. Some women opt for female hormone replacement therapy to relieve the symptoms and get protection against osteoporosis.

Female Hormone Replacement Therapy

During menopause, the ovaries produce less of estrogen and progesterone. This reduction in hormonal production puts an end to fertility and menstruation, and also causes mood swings, hot flashes, urinary problems and vaginal dryness. For many decades, doctors have used female hormone replacement therapy to relieve the symptoms.

However, as per the large clinical trials conducted in 2002, the results indicated that female hormone replacement therapy actually poses more risks than benefits. This has resulted in plenty of confusion regarding this therapy, and the truth remains that it is not a magical cure. However, it is still one of the most effective and sought after treatments for several menopausal symptoms.

To get relief from menopausal night sweats and hot flashes, estrogen is the most effective treatment. It also eases the vaginal symptoms associated with menopause such as burning, itching, dryness, and discomfort during intercourse.

Long term female hormone replacement therapy for preventing the postmenopausal conditions is not routinely recommended any more. But, taking estrogen for short term relief can protect against colorectal cancer, osteoporosis, and heart disease. However, taking the combination estrogen-progestin increases the risk of developing some serious conditions such as heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and blood clots.

Despite several associated health risks with female hormone replacement therapy, estrogen is still quite promising in treating the menopausal symptoms. Benefits offered in the short-term far outweigh the potential risks, and women get the relief from many menopausal symptoms. The available data regarding female hormone replacement therapy is quite confusing and scary, however the risk is quite low. If you are considering this therapy, talk to your doctor to find if this treatment is required, and if it will be able to offer any benefit in your case.

Women with heart disease, breast cancer or history of blood clots must not consider taking female hormone replacement therapy. Women can however make the healthy lifestyles changes. Before trying any medication or therapy to treat the menopausal symptoms, try changing your eating habits and exercise plan. If you still do not get any relief, there are several medications available to relieve the discomfort.

The only way to determine if effects of female hormone replacement therapy will be beneficial for you is to talk to your doctor. Review other options, and make sure you make the informed decision.
