A Guide To Yeast Infection

Yeast is a fungus, and is usually present on human skin, and areas with high levels of moisture such as vagina and mouth. Inflammation of vagina is called vaginitis, and is quite common among women of all age groups. Vaginal yeast infection is most common form of vaginitis, and is also known as vaginal candidiasis. Inflammation in the female’s external vaginal organs is known as vulvitis.

Healthy vagina has small number of yeast cells and many bacteria. Lactobacillus is the most common bacteria, and it keeps other organisms under control. When balance of these organisms changes, yeast can grow causing yeast infection.

Causes Of Yeast Infection

Introduction of new yeast in the vaginal area causes yeast infection. This infection may also occur due to injury to inner vagina. Women who have suppressed immune system develop this infection more often as compared to women with normal level of immunity. Pregnancy, oral contraceptives and diabetes mellitus may also cause vaginal yeast infection.

Various yeast infection symptoms include burning, severe itching, irritation of the skin, soreness, and whitish-grey discharge. A week before the menstrual period, these symptoms are more likely to occur.

Treating the yeast infection can be as simple as using an antifungal cream or tablets if you are not pregnant, and can recognize the symptoms well. Sometimes, the symptoms are mild and clear up on their own. But, if there is high fever and lower abdominal pain along with vaginal discharge, call your doctor immediately. If there is unusual vaginal itching, unusual discharge, pain during urination or sex, or you suspect the vaginal yeast infection, take the appointment with the doctor. Doctor may be able to diagnose the infections based on vaginal examination and medical history.

Preventing Vaginal Yeast Infection

It is however best option to prevent the vaginal yeast infection by keeping the genital area as dry as possible, and giving it the opportunity to breathe. Avoid wearing nylon underwear, and instead wear a loose fitting cotton one. Avoid scented toilet paper, feminine sprays and tampons.

Eat a well-balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products. Keep vaginal area clean, and use mild soap and water to clean it. If diabetic, control the blood sugar levels as it decreases the risk of vaginal yeast infection. After using toilet, use tissue paper to wipe from back so that the yeast does not spread from anus to vagina.

Instead of tampons, use pads as tampons may absorb the medicine. If vaginal area is painful and swollen, sit in warm water, or put a cool, damp cloth on the area, but do not rub.
