Baby Yeast Infection: What You Should Know

Baby thrush is yet another name for baby yeast infection. It is a kind of yeast infection caused by bacteria building up in the child's mouth and private areas. It manifests itself on new born babies as well as older infants. Though yeast infection in babies is not considered life threatening, it is known to cause discomfort in the baby. Because baby yeast infection is asymptomatic, it is hard to tell when your baby has it. Nonetheless, paying close attention to the baby's behavior is an easy way of knowing if the baby is suffering from thrush.

Babies with thrush are often times angry, frustrated and grumpy more so around feeding time. A white and gray curd-like and lacy area on the infant's mouth or tongue is how thrush clinically presents itself. An infected child does not retain a pacifier in his/her mouth but instead spits it out. Baby yeast infection is caused by antibiotics. Antibiotics aid the growth of candida, the bacteria responsible for the growth of yeast, and in so doing weakens the infant's immune system. A mother can transmit the infection to her child. Infected mothers are likely to transmit infection to the child in the course of breast feeding. The infection may also be caused by unclean bottles and pacifiers.

It is for this reason that parents are advised to always ensure that baby bottles and pacifiers are thoroughly cleaned. Warm and damp weather also allow the bacteria to grow. In the initial stages, baby yeast infection is regarded as harmless. However, the infection has serious side effects for instance dehydration and malnutrition. Difficulty in swallowing and suckling as well as discomfort are additional side effects. In later stages, the infection spreads to the infant's gastro-intestinal system causing diaper rush.

The best way of treating baby yeast infection is by sterilizing baby equipments such as pacifiers and bottles. Keeping equipment dry is highly recommended as the bacteria that causes yeast mostly thrives in environments that are humid. It is important that you change the baby's diapers as soon as they get soiled. In addition, clean the infant's private parts and ensure they remain dry. Prior to placing the diapers, always allow the child's bottom to air-dry for a short while. Make certain the diaper is not excessively tight. This stops the bacteria from flourishing. You ought to consult a pediatrician if the thrush persists. He or she is able to treat the thrush by administering the correct drugs.
