Food Choices

One of the major causes of coronary heart disease is eating foods laden with fat, sugar, preservatives and with little nutritional value. Eating lots of candy, pastries, fattening burgers and fries, and just fast food in general, can lead to coronary heart disease over time. So make better choices. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, eat lean protein sources and make sure you drink lots of water.

Alcohol

There are conflicting reports on whether or not alcohol consumption is one of the causes of coronary heart disease. Some say that drinking red wine in moderation can actually help to keep you heart disease free. However, too much alcohol, even red wine, can lead to all sorts of problems. So, just to be on the safe side, if you are going to drink, drink in moderation. Whether or not alcohol consumption is a cause of coronary heart disease, you should try to drink as little as possible to remain healthy.

Smoking

Smoking is definitely a cause of coronary heart disease. It's disgusting and unhealthy but it's also very hard to quit once you've started. Talk to your doctor about smoking cessation products or prescriptions and make sure you stay away from this cause of coronary heart disease.

Exercise

If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you could potentially come down with heart disease. Get plenty of exercise. Even walking three or four times per week for thirty or forty five minutes can do wonders for your waist line as well as your health. Not exercising is a cause of coronary heart disease, just make sure not to overdo it and always talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program.

Genetics

You could live the healthiest lifestyle out of anyone you know and you could still come down with coronary heart disease because it could run in your genes. Get regular checkups and continue to live healthy and you should be able to keep heart disease at bay as long as you refrain from the major causes of coronary heart disease; even if it does run in your family.
