Is Bird Watching A Hobby For You?

Bird watching is a very enjoyable relaxing hobby that almost anyone can take up. The basic definition of bird watching is the study of birds either with through bird watching binoculars or with your naked eye. Many people who participate in bird watching also enjoy the sounds the birds make and can often identify the bird from the sound they make before they even see the bird. Many people pursue bird watching as a recreational sport while others pursue it for research. The benefit of bird watching is that it is a relatively inexpensive sport to participate in and it is something a beginner can do from the comforts of their home regardless of age, ability, and health.

History Of Bird Watching

Many people observed birds early on not for pleasure or research but for a utilitarian purpose. They participated in bird watching as a way to learn when to gather the eggs or for to find out when it was a good time to hunt the birds for food. It grew into a trendy past time in Britain during the Victorian Era. In the early twentieth century, the ability to see birds from long distances became possible with the advent of bird watching binoculars and guidebooks. The emergence of guidebooks allowed even a novice the ability to identify birds they may have never seen before or known about. Soon organizations began to form as more and more people started to find an interest in the sport. Participants of bird watching like to keep a list of what birds they have seen and when they where able to spot them.

Activities You Can Participate In

For much of the twentieth century, bird watching was an activity mainly enjoyed by those on the east coast. But the sport has now progressed and many people all across the United States enjoy bird watching as a recreation. Location and weather play an important role in the activities that can occur for bird watching. There are many activities you can participate in as a bird watcher. Many of the organizations put together special gatherings through out the year to watch the bird's migration south. Many also take part in studies to follow the individual species population and migratory patterns. Some places even put together competitions. Many bird watchers try to increase the list of birds they have been able to spot by participating in the competitions that can take place all across the world.
