There are many different ways to make clever homemade Halloween costumes that do not cost the individual an arm and a leg. Since there are dress up parties that go on during other times of the year and a costume has to be created on the spur of the moment from the items and makeup that are around the house. One easy homemade Halloween costume to make is to dress like an ancient Greek. All that is needed for this costume is an old sheet that can be wrapped around the body and pinned so that it creates a toga. The individual may also put a rope type of a belt around the toga to provide the waistline. The person's head can be decorated with a wreath that can be made by taking a branch from a tree and bending it and tying it with a small piece of string or fishing line.

Another easy homemade Halloween costume is to make an old man or old woman's costume. The clothing for an old man should be a dress shirt and some dark pants that are cuffed at the bottom. An old sports coat can also be worn, hanging open. A pillow can be stuffed into the shirt to create a pot belly on the old man. The hair can be made white by using flour from the kitchen and dusting it through the hair. A cheap cane can be bought at a costume shop if wanted; otherwise a shuffle should be taken by the individual to create the older person effect. The old woman's clothing should consist of an old dress that hangs like a sack and possibly has a belt so that a pillow can be added in the front and back to create a larger bust and hip area. Some knee hi stockings should be rolled down slightly and a large black purse should be held close to the chest while walking with a shuffle. The hair can be dusted with flour like the old man and can also be put up in a bun for an older look. Spectacles are also a nice effect to use with either homemade Halloween costume.

One other popular homemade Halloween costume is the nerd costume. For this costume, some high water pants should be worn that are slightly tight. Suspenders should hold them up and one part of the shirt should be hanging out. A pocket protector that is full of pens and pencils should be used to create the nerdy look as well as plastic, dark rimmed glasses that have tape in the middle of them, like they are being held together.
