Mom's Bed And Breakfast

Mom's Bed and Breakfast

Bed and breakfast facilities continue to become more and more popular every year. That is why setting up your own bed and breakfast can become a great way to become a work-at-home mom while operating classy limited-stay hotel and restaurant. If you have a large home with some rooms that would work well as guest rooms, you could turn your home into a bed and breakfast and extend the same hospitality you give to family and friends to your guests for a profit.

The basics of a bed and breakfast are pretty simple. You will do a little remodeling to turn 3-4 bedrooms into guest rooms. They don't have to be as professional as hotel rooms because people know they are staying in a home. But they should be clean, very comfortable and set up with the amenities that people like in a hotel room like television and a separate bathroom for each suite if possible.

If your home is near a tourist location, that is a natural source of guests for your bed and breakfast. Whether the tourist draw is a theme park or a natural site like a state park, people who come to visit would almost always rather stay in a cozy home environment than a hotel or motel. They are often willing to pay a little more for the feel of home and a homemade breakfast the next day.

Unlike many work-at-home businesses, there will be some investment to create a bed and breakfast on your property. Most homes are not naturally set up as guest facilities. So some remodeling will be called for. You will also need to make sure the food service is organized in a professional manner so you can get your permits and so it is easy to offer your guests food and beverage service once you open your doors to the public.

Another factor about whether a bed and breakfast is a good home business for your family is your family dynamic. Some families are very private and the presence of strangers might create tension, even if they are physically separated from the family living quarters. But if your family enjoys taking on a challenge together and you often see your family thrive on visitors, even your spouse and kids may throw themselves into being great hosts for the guests at your bed and breakfast.

The preparation for starting your bed and breakfast can also be a fun part of building a business as a family. That is because part of your preparation will be to travel to various locations nearby and stay in some bed and breakfast facilities yourself to get some ideas of what you liked about those bed and breakfasts and what you would do differently in yours. Often if you do patronize various popular sites in your area, the owners will be happy to share some tips and their experiences as they learned to set up their bed and breakfast operations. But if you take the family on these outings, the trips can be deductible as part of your business expenses and you can have a mini vacation as well.

As you put together your business plan for your new bed and breakfast, don't forget some funds for advertising. If you create the most delightful and restful site for guests to enjoy during their stay, that isn't enough if nobody knows about it. Vacation web sites are great places to advertise. You can also have a brochure professionally produced and have it placed at local restaurants and tourists sites so people find them when they are passing through on vacation.

But probably the greatest advertising will be the word of mouth that will happen as more and more people come and enjoy your bed and breakfast. Your guests will have a great time and you many find that just offering your hospitality to families fits your personality as a mom because you are just opening your home to others the way you have for your own family all along.
