The Area Rug: A Decorating Element That Creates Space And Harmony

If there's a tricky doorsill in the doorway to a room,
you'll be careful to warn people to watch their step --
literally. Warning your guests about the doorsill will
likely draw attention to your floor. It's a good idea
to prepare yourself for this moment and make sure your
rug is a nice sight.

Unless you're a postmodern artist who likes to experience
with color and pattern clashes, you'll find that the best
choice for an area rug is one that matches your existing
furniture, as well as the color and pattern on your walls.
This is no easy task, which is why many actually reverse
the process: they start by choosing a rug they like and
then select the furniture and decide on wall color so as
to match the existing rug. It's not impossible, however,
to find a nice rug that harmonizes with the rest of the
room.

Keep in mind that a rug should blend with the colors in
a room. This gives the room a more spacious look. By
blending with its surroundings, a rug gives the impression
of a smoother whole. A rug also adds to a room's personality
as well as serves as an interior decorating element that
makes the connection between and among everything else on
the floor. Whether you want your furniture to be on the
rug or around the rug is your choice. Once you've found a
rug with the right color scheme and pattern, don't be afraid
to experiment with furniture placements until you achieve
your desired or preferred look.
