Using The "Principle Of 3" In Decorating

From mythology to modern times, the number 3 has significance associated with it. We come across it in legends, fairy tales, ancient rituals, and even some present-day customs. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the number 3 is used extensively in interior decorating.

How can you apply it in your home? You can group together three candles of different heights, three kinds of imitation fruits in a bowl, three books propped against a novelty bookend, three different colors of ceramic balls...

When applying the "principle of 3" in interior decorating, keep in mind that the three objects should belong to the same functional or decorative category. Take also into account the relative size of the three objects you want to group together -- on the one hand, their relative size as compared among themselves, and on the other hand, their size relative to the environment you'll place them in. The three objects shouldn't be exactly the same size, although the size difference shouldn't be too big. The objects' environment should be fairly larger than the total size of the three objects. In short, make sure there is unoccupied space around the three objects.

Be careful not to overdo this interior decorating technique, though. Don't take the examples enumerated in this article as requisites and go grouping everything that can be grouped. Alternate between groups of three and single objects. You'll be able to make your room a more attractive place.
