Portable Water Filters Can Provide Reliable Source Of Water

Having a reliable and consistent supply of clean water is a necessity for everyone and for those spending a lot of time camping or on long hikes, portable water filters can make their packs much lighter. Lugging gallons of water while on a hike can be an unnecessary burden they do not have to bear as the many different types of portable water filters available can provide the clean water they need, with or without chemicals. While many of the chemical treatments also serve to purify the water, many do not particularly like the taste of the water they produce.

Gravity-fed portable water filters contain sand, activated charcoal or some other filtering device and water poured into the top of the unit flows through the filter leaving all of the impurities behind when it flows out of the unit. How fast portable water filters go through the filter will depend on the size of the filtering aggregate as the more fine a filter the water has to go through these types of filters, the slower it goes.

Some of the better portable water filters will rely on reverse osmosis technology and require the water be forced through the filter since the filtering material is so fine. Gravity can not move the water through at all and the source of the pressure can be a hand pump or even a small battery-operated pump to force the water through the filter.

Making Sure Water Is Clean And Pure For Health Reasons

Some portable water filters will use membrane material as their filtering devices with several layers of material to cleanse water with filters as small as .04 microns. These filters also provide portable water purification as the size of the filters will also remove many of the bacterial impurities that carry disease. It is important to make sure the water is not only free of the impurities floating in the water but also free of bacteria to protect their health.

Using portable water filters allows campers and hikers to leave those heavy jugs of water at home and allows them to use virtually any water they find as a source. Still, many feel safer using chemical-based portable water filters to clean out all of the suspended particles and the chemicals to kill any harmful bacteria it may contain. Regardless of the purification method used, filtering the water first allows the purifier to work much more efficiently as it is harder to purify dirty water.
