Water Filtration Device Must Have Clean Filters To Work Properly

There is one aspect of using a water filtration device that a few folks seem to forget about and that is as they do they job for which they were installed, the filters must be changed as they become clogged. Filters are designed with different size openings through which the water flows and when the filters become filled with the impurities they remove, they can no longer work as efficiently as designed. If the water filtration device becomes totally clogged no water will pass through at all.

It should also be remembered that no matter how efficient a water filtration device is working, if the filter is too large, there will be impurities that are allowed to pass through and end up in the water used by the consumer. Of the many devices on the market, some use activated carbon to filter out impurities, some use sand while others use carbon-block resin or membrane filters to capture many smaller impurities. The ultra-fine membranes are usually seen in reverse osmosis systems and while the membranes will catch a majority of disease carrying bacteria, if they are not changed or cleaned periodically, water will not pass through them.

Even with all of the larger particles removed from the water, a water filtration device should also be able to capture the smallest microbes, as small as .01-microns in order to aid any water purification products also used in the water supply.

Most Filters Have Little Effect On Taste

Water passing through a water filtration device will typically have filters that may be as small as .1 microns, which can capture most metals or other particles in the water supply. However, the water may still retain some of the taste of those metals. It is more common in rural areas with water pumped from a well to have the taste of the minerals in the ground, such as iron and even sulfur. A complete water filtration device will also use purification to rid the water of many of these unpleasant tastes.

It is often not enough to simply pass water through a water filtration device to make it healthy to drink. It may also need to go through a purification process. In many systems the water is first filtered before being purified in order to allow more efficient operation of the system. This would be especially important in whole-house water filtering and purification systems to aid with efficient operation of the system.
