The state of public health has improved as modern science increasingly developed. Public health became a worldwide concern when the need to address certain disease outbreaks like cholera, which happened in London, England in 1854, became imminent. Public health was the impetus for the creation of a better sewage system in developed countries like the United States of America and England.

With the passing of time some models of sewage treatment or wastewater treatment process became obsolete or no longer appropriate in modern times. Wastewater treatment process has keep up with the changing needs of the time in order to keep the environment safe and the people from both water and vector-borne diseases.

The typical wastewater treatment process specifically for the domestic wastewater treatment includes three stages: primary treatment, secondary treatment, and tertiary treatment. In the first stage of the domestic wastewater treatment process the solid particles are segregated from the liquid with the use of a mechanical separator.

In the second stage of wastewater process the biological component of the wastewater are decomposed. On the third stage is to keep the quality of effluent harmless once they are disposed to public waterways.

Other ways of treating wastewater include sand filtration, which aims to eliminate the residue in water, and toxins are also removed. On-site lagoons are also artificially constructed especially in dairy farm, livestock farms and other industrial establishments. Lagooning is used as one option in treating wastewater that depended heavily on the aerobic capabilities of some microorganisms. Natural and artificial wetlands are also one wastewater method. The concept is similar to that of the artificial lagoon

Wastewater treatment process is expected to further improve due to the drastic change in people’s lifestyle and the need for spaces especially in urban setting where a space getting narrower due to the heavy improvements in infrastructure. The need to find ways in making wastewater treatment process available to all households in all of the U.S. is so vital. This is very important especially in urban ghettos where clean and safe drinking water is unaffordable and the absence of better wastewater treatment facility has confounded the spread of water-borne diseases.

Wastewater treatment is a vital component of public health. Both should go together in order to achieve better health for the public most especially the children and the aging population. In addressing public health concern, the need to respond the problem on wastewater treatment must be addressed at the same time.
