We often take water for granted. We always expect that our water is clean and safe for drinking without even bothering to check if that is true. However, lately there have been some unsettling stories of contamination in our water supplies. One thing these news accounts have positively done: they make us ask questions regarding the safety of our water.

What are water treatment systems?

Water treatment systems are methods used to improve the quality of water. They can remove or, at the very least, reduce the level of harmful contaminants found in tap water. In so doing, water treatment systems can keep the water safe and healthy for human consumption.

What are the different water-borne contaminants?

There is one important note to remember about water: it is never entirely pure. So water, even if it is labeled “100% pure,” may still contain minerals and other compounds that are not necessarily harmful to your health.

However, there are certain contaminants that are not naturally-occurring in water. These contaminants can harm or kill plants and animals, including humans. These are the contaminants that water treatment systems aim to remove from our water supplies.

Water-borne contaminants greatly vary in their chemical composition as well as behavior. These contaminants may include arsenic, pesticides, lead, and other harmful compounds. The type of water treatment systems to use will depend on these two factors.

Water Treatment Methods

There are various types of water treatment systems currently used to improve our water supplies. Here is a list of water treatment systems commercially available:

* Chlorination disinfection
* Water softener or cation exchange
* Ultra-violet treatment
* Distillation
* Reverse osmosis or membrane filtration
* Neutralizing filtration
* Oxidation filtration
* Activated carbon filtration
* Mechanical or sedimentation filtration

How to Choose Water Treatment Systems

There are many water treatment systems that are small enough to be fitted at home. When shopping one, you may encounter these two: point of entry and point of use systems.

A point of entry treatment system treats all the water that is being distributed in the home. It is often installed in the source of your water itself, and includes systems such as sedimentation filters, iron control treatment, chlorination, and water softeners.

Point of use treatment system, on the other hand, selectively treats parts of the water in your home. Usually, the system is focused on only one faucet – that is, only certain points of your water supply are treated. Thus, water that comes out from that particular faucet is the only water in the home that is safe for human consumption.

Note that water treatment systems are different from what is termed as ‘conditioning systems.’ While water treatment systems can reduce contaminants in our water supplies, conditioning systems address a wholly different set of problems, namely taste, smell, and appearance of water.
