When you become ill or injured, you may be harming more than your health. The illness or injury could affect your ability to work. If you cannot work for a temporary period, there is a likely chance that you would be unable to meet your family's living expenses.
Group disability income insurance helps you pay for your living expenses when you are unable to work as a result of a disability. The purpose of group disability income is to provide you with monetary benefits, designed to replace a portion of your income during your recovery period.
The money is paid directly to you for spending on mortgage payments or rent and other living expenses, including groceries, utility bills, and car payments. Depending on the type of group disability income insurance program you chose, payment can also include training or other assistance that you may need in order to return to work.
What You Need to Do
Before you purchase a group disability income insurance policy, there are a few things you need to consider. Foremost among them is your available resources. You may already be eligible for disability benefits from your employer, the government, or other programs.
Employer's Benefits
Employer's group disability income insurance may be part of your workers' compensation insurance for work-related injuries. In addition, if your illness is only short-term, your employer may provide you with sick leave, short-term disability insurance, or both.
A typical group disability income insurance will typically cover part of your salary if you are disabled and unable to work for a period of six months or more. This portion of your salary may be as much as half of your salary or up to a specific benefit, such as $5,000 per month for instance.
Social Security Benefits
In addition to your employer's benefits, the Social Security Administration also provides group disability income insurance. The disability benefits under the social security program are based on your salary, plus the number of years you have worked.
In order to be eligible for social security disability benefits, you must have contributed to the Social Security system. This usually happens through your employer. Or if you are self-employed, you may opt to pay as a self-employed individual.
There are certain requirements that you must comply with in order to receive social security disability benefits. These requirements include:
* Disability lasting for five full calendar months
* Disability is expected to last at least 12 months or end in death
* Individual is unable to be gainfully employed at any occupation at the time the disability began
There are also other programs that provide you with group disability income insurance. For instance, veterans injured in war receive special disability benefits from the state. Try to research on what options you have.
