Disability is something that you may have read or heard about, but not visualize as something that could actually happen to you. But, what if it does happen to you or someone you knew? Social Security provides financial help to those who have disability condition. But, before they do, you have to supply all the required information to help them decide or grant your application. Social Security has two disability programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities, such as Social Security Disability income and Supplemental Security Income.
Federal law requires very strict definition of disability. Under Social Security Act, disability means inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical of mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months. While some other programs give money to people with partial disability or short-term disability, Social Security does not. Social Security pays those who fall under the definition of disability along with other supporting documents. Therefore, to qualify for claims of Social Security Disability Income, you should have enough proof of your condition.
Generally, to get a disability benefit, you have to meet two different earning tests, such as:
§ A recent work test based on your age at the age you became disabled
§ A duration of work test to show that you worked long enough under Social Security
To apply for Social Security disability income, you have the option to do it online at socialsecurity.gov. Or, call the Social Security toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 to make an appointment to file a disability claim at your local Social Security office or to set up an appointment for someone to take your claim over the telephone. If you have hearing impairment, you may call the toll-free TTY number at 1-800-325-0778 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on business days only.
If you schedule an appointment for your application to Social Security disability income, a disability starter kit will be mailed to you. This disability starter kit will help you get ready for your disability claims interview. If you opt to apply online, a disability starter kit is available already.
As soon as you become disabled, you should apply for Social Security disability income. It may take a little longer, which is about 3 to 5 months, to process your application. To apply for disability benefits, you have to complete an application for Social Security benefits and the Disability Report online or have the forms printed and submit them to your local Social Security office. Your application will be processed quickly if you provide all the information they need.
