Understanding What Is A Blog

A blog is the shortened form of web log - the term used to denote a journal or record that is maintained in cyber space, or to be more prosaic, online. A blog is really nothing more than a small website where the author's (or blogger's) thoughts and opinions are recorded and regularly updated by an activity that is called blogging. This who know what a blog is know that the term blogger is not just used to indicate the author of the blogs but is also used to denote those who respond to the posts and also those who work to maintain the blogs.

The format of the blog is often confusing to those new to blogging because there is no format - almost anything goes in blogging and besides adding video and audio the blogs, any kind of language and writing style is can be used. The subject matter of a blog can be anything at all and you will find blogs on subjects of current topical interest such as politics, war, the environment, the recession and so on, along with a vast range of niche or esoteric subjects that could be just about anything under the sun.

While there is no fixed blogging style, most blogs are written in an informal and relaxed manner and try not be formal in their nature. Depending on the views of the author a blog can be very conventional and sedate in the subject, and how the author's opinion are expressed and what type of comments and responses are accepted for posting on the blog are decided by him.

Other blogs may be very sensational in nature and present opinions and use language that may shock many readers - while these views and ways of expression are often genuine, they are also sometimes done just to create controversy and thus generate interest in the blog.

Anyone interested in presenting his or her opinions to the world through the medium of the internet may do so by blogging. Everyone who asks "what is a blog" also asks how much it will cost and the answer to that is that there is no cost - there are a large number of websites that will provide a place to post the blog and also help in the design and maintenance, all for no charge. The question that usually comes after "what is a blog" is "who blogs?" and the answer to that is everyone blogs and you will find people from all walks of life, from every part of the world, with every shade of opinion and from the ages of 7 to 99 blogging. If your blog becomes popular and attracts a large audience, you can earn money by allowing ads to be placed on your blog - many very popular bloggers earn large incomes this way.
