Search Engine Optimization (SO) Explained

Have you ever been in a large group of people all waiting for some famous musician or politician to arrive at an event? How did these people act? What about the reporters at a large murder trial? How did they behave?

Most likely in both of these events you observed a large group of people all fighting to get to the best position to get noticed. There is a lot of pushing and shoving and yelling - basically chaos at its best. Most people would rather not be in this type of situation. It's all about competition. The small number of people who push their way to the front are the only ones with a chance of getting attention. These are the ones who will be rewarded with whatever is available.

What does all this have to do with Search Engine Optimization (SO)? The answer is easy, it's all about competition. Competition, no matter where it occurs, is the fight for both survival and dominance. Most people won't be happy with just being there. People will do whatever they can not only to win but to make it to the top. This way of thinking is what created the concept of SO in the first place.

Search Engine Optimization can be considered a science. It is the act of gathering data on your market and your competition in order to optimize your site's headlines and content so more users of search engines will find your website. Every search is accomplished by entering keywords into a search engine. It is your goal to fine-tune your site so that those using the best and most frequent terms will find it. With these keywords, you make it to the front of the crowd. Without these important words, you fade into the woodwork and disappear.

Search engines read your search words and rank sites by the number and quality of match to the searcher's terms. Use the correct terms to describe what your site is about and you get a higher ranking with that search engine. These ranks are updated every week so you have an opportunity to move up next week if you aren't there today. The problem is, your competitors have that same chance of moving up. And the competition will constantly search for a way to rank above you. Don't let up on your efforts to stay on top. Change your site where necessary so you can keep your rankings higher and stay ahead of the competition.
