Most identity thieves will actually call their victims in person and start talking to them being very friendly, in order to get personal information out of them. They will probably pretend to be a credit card company or other bill collector asking you to update your personal information or something of the sort. Just be very careful with who you are giving personal information out to on the phone. A lot of the time identity theft is committed via email. They will send someone an email pretending to be a legitimate company and seek out personal information.
There are again a lot of people who fall for this scam. People need to know that a legitimate and reputable company such as PayPal would never request that sort of information in an email and so it is important to never respond back to these sorts of messages and instead just mark them as spam. Remember as well that these are just two examples of the different identity theft scams that are used. The most important thing is that people take preventative measures so that they can hopefully avoid becoming a victim of identity theft.
Shredding documents before throwing them in the garbage and always taking your bank receipt after using an ATM is so important. Bank and credit card statements, old bank cards and driver's license cards and everything else with any sort of personal information should be more than just ripped up. It is always important to keep an eye on your credit report. This is going to show you what accounts are open in your name and how much debt you have accrued.
