Identity theft is one of the most common crimes today. This is a crime in which a person's identity is taken and their name is used to open up different accounts and steal money. They are able to open up bank accounts and credit card accounts in that person's name and keep all the money while leaving the victim with all the debt. People often assume that when the Internet came out this is when identity theft started but this is isn't the case.

This crime was around long before that and actually first identity theft crimes were committed ages ago when people would actually murder someone else and take their identity in order to gain anonymity and money. Although relatively short, identity theft has been very common for about five years now and the rates of this crime are only continuing to increase. They will usually call up and offer some incentive and get the person excited so that they will not be thinking and will give away their personal information.

They may say that you have won a prize and that they need your address and personal information to send it to you. While some do still use incentives to try and swindle their way into attaining a person's information via telephone, few do. There are other more advanced methods that are much more successful and which they tend to rely on. Then the history of identity theft continued to evolve when they began dumpster diving. No longer did these thieves need to hope that they could con people into giving away their information because now they could just rummage through the trash and find it on their own. They will go through trash bags and collect different things that they would consider valuable such as bank and credit card statements and especially identification cards which they can easily use to open up new accents in that person's name.

They still use dumpster diving to get what they need but again, people are smarter now and more cautious with what they are throwing in the trash. Make sure that you shred all important documents before tossing themes if you only rip them in half thieves are still able to piece them together. The history of identity theft is only going to continue to evolve and as it does people need to take further precautions to keep them safe. Typically what identity thieves will do is use emails pretending to be PayPal or another reputable company and say that they need personal information for updating of an account. Now identity thieves can even use the Internet to communicate with people and get the information that they need to commit their crime.
