How To Care For Orchids

Orchids flourish in bright light, but they are quite intolerant to full sun. Screened-in patios and pool enclosures provide excellent place to grow them. They also grow well hanging on the trees with enough shade during noon.

Most varieties of orchids love high humidity and abundance of water, especially during high temperatures. To take care of orchids, it is imperative that they should not go without water for more than 2-3 days. When temperature is high and humidity is low, these plants can be watered daily. During winters, they require less water. Wrinkling or softening of leaves indicates that the plant is not being watered often. To take care of orchids, always water it early in the day so that the plant dries out by night.

To take care of orchids, apply Diazine WP, Orthene soluble power or Safers Soap to avoid thrips. Spraying for thrips can be done twice or thrice a year as this also takes care of other pests.

Soil quality is extremely important to take care of orchids, and as soil deteriorates in confined environments, it is essential to apply fertilizers regularly to maintain good soil quality. Some orchids grow better when perched on the elevated spot as these plants gain their nutrients from air. Most varieties of orchids cannot bear the stagnant air and require good breeze to keep the leaves moist.

To take care of orchids, you need to expose them to a lot of lighting as their photosynthesis depends on the quality of light received. Some plants like Phalaenopsis is able to live on artificial light while others like Cattleyas flourish best in natural light.

The biggest enemy of orchid plant is over-watering. Orchids have a great capacity of water retention, and feeding more water can be fatal for them. To take care of orchids, it is essential to keep them in green houses that have artificial heating system during winters.

To take care of orchids is a challenge, but the results can be very fulfilling and rewarding.
