Hydroponics

The Low Down On Hydroponic Supplies

Hydroponics is not too new a concept but it may be a new one to you. The name ‘hydroponics’ doesn’t let on much about its real meaning. This is simply the method of growing plants without the use of soil. Instead of soil, a mineral nutrient rich solution is used to grow the plants in. This is used in many greenhouses and for the home plant hobbyist. Hydroponic indoor gardening is quite beneficial. Hydroponically grown plants are proven to grow faster than ones grown in soil do and through hydroponics your indoor gardening can be done all year round, not being affected by the seasons.

This type of gardening is especially suited to small spaces like apartments and even classrooms. The added value for the plants is that they are less likely to contract diseases or be affected by pests when indoors. The added value for you is that your hydroponic gardening system is much easier to maintain as you don’t have digging to do, there is no maintenance of the top soil and there are no weeds to take out. Hydroponic gardening is an attractive option, but what hydroponic supplies do you need in order for it to be successful?

All Stocked Up

Hydroponic supplies may seem like they should be costly and highly complicated gadgets in order to get your plants to grow without the use of soil. Hydroponic growing supplies vary according to the plants you are growing and the system you are using. Some of the hydroponic supplies you are likely to need include fans, air cleaners and ionizers. You are also going to need hydroponic supplies like pumps, huts, cooling and lighting systems and something to control any odour. There are only 4 basic hydroponic systems to choose from.

The hydroponic supplies you will buy need to cater to your chosen system. The ebb and flow system floods your plant roots with your nutrient rich solution at timed intervals. Once the interval is over the solution is drained in order to allow oxygen to get to the roots. The drip systems drips nutrient solution onto the plants’ roots and the excess can be collected to be reused later.

The nutrient film technique allows a film of slowly moving nutrient and fertilizer solutions to run down sloped channels over the roots. The excess is collected to be reused again. Finally, the aeroponic system is often used in greenhouses and creates a fine mist of the nutrient solution that wafts down onto the plants. The different systems use more or less the same hydroponic supplies with perhaps a few differences here and there.
