In some of these systems, the plants are placed above the reservoir and a wick is placed in the bottom of the plant's container. The wick will run into the reservoir from the plant's container so that the water is sucked up into the plant to the roots so that they have water every time they get dry. These indoor plant watering techniques do require that the plants be placed on something that is water proof so that if there are any drips from the system it does not cause damage in the home or office.

One of the most important aspects of indoor plant watering is the type of soil that is used with the plants. The plants should have a light potting soil that has porous material in it. In this way, the soil will drain the way it should while still retaining an amount of moisture in it for the roots of the plant. If the material is too heavy, the soil will become soaked and rot the roots. If the soil is too sandy it will not retain enough water for the roots.
