Make Your Own Organic Gardening Pest Control Sprays

Before you take any pest control steps you need to be sure if the bugs that inhabit your garden are really harmful. As it happens, only a very small percentage of these insects, about 5% in all, can really hurt your garden and many help by carrying pollen from plant to plant and aiding fertilization. Many other of these small creatures either eat weeds or consume the eggs of harmful bugs. That does not mean that the few which are harmful can be ignored or wished away - you will have to get rid of them.

Being an organic gardener you are already encouraging natural biological organic gardening pest control. But half the battle is not enough and you cannot use commercially produced chemicals or your garden will cease to be an organic one. The answer lies in using organic gardening pest control - creating pest sprays from safe organic materials. Besides being very effective and ensuring that your garden remains organic, organic gardening pest control sprays are much cheaper than commercially produced chemical pesticides.

While learning how to make these sprays is easy, you first need to understand the basic types of organic gardening pest control methods. Sprays made of a mixture of water or alcohol and strong smelling materials like tobacco leaves, garlic, onions, and even fish can be sprayed onto plants to drive away insects that are sensitive to smell. Similarly, many plants themselves give of odors (which humans cannot sense) which repel insects and sprays made from these plants are effective in driving away harmful bugs. Many insects are repelled or even killed off by soap.

Natural vegetable based detergents and soaps can be used to make a mild spray which, because of the stickiness of the soap, will remain on the plants and provide long term protection from insects. You can kill many insect types by spraying them with a homemade mixture of vegetable and mineral oils which will coat their bodies and suffocate them. If that does not work you can make an organic gardening pest control spray out of a mixture of hot chilies and neutral alcohol that, when it comes into contact will the insects, will burn them.

There are hundreds of recipes for organic gardening pest control sprays and powders and an online search will provide all the information you need on how to make them. Be warned that over using these sprays can be counter productive. Do not presume that just because they are organic they are not strong - using too much can damage your garden. Some of these sprays may cause your plants to burn if used in direct sunlight to try to use them in the evenings.
