The Beauty Of A Summer Vegetable Garden

When you were a child, chances are that vegetables were not your favorite food. After all, with such foods as ice cream, how could any other food really compare? However, as you got older you began to appreciate the delicious taste of vegetables, and have decided that the time is right to plant your own summer vegetable garden.

Getting Your Summer Vegetable Garden Ready

The first thing that you are going to need to do is make a list of the vegetables that you would like to grow in your summer vegetable garden. Keep in mind that each vegetable should be planted at least a foot away from another vegetable, so that the root systems of the vegetable plants can grow successfully.

The next thing that you are going to need to do is select an area of your yard in which you would like to plant your summer vegetable garden. Make sure that the area is one that is exposed to a significant amount of sunlight during the day.

Once the area for the summer vegetable garden has been selected, you are going to need to get a tiller to dig up the grass. You do not want any grass seed left in the soil, because that can affect the root system of the vegetable plants. Once the area has been tilled, add some extra nutrients to the soil by getting specially formulated soil at your local gardening center.

The area having been cultivated, the next thing you have to do is figure out what vegetable plants you would like to plant. Keep in mind that some vegetable plants, like corn for example, will be planted in the summer, but not harvested until early fall.

The best way to plant a summer vegetable garden is in rows, equally spaced. Plants like tomatoes will need extra support, so make sure that you get stakes to secure the stems to. Something else that you will need to think about is animal infestation.

For example, animals like skunks and woodchucks love to eat tomatoes, and as such it is not uncommon to find one bite taken out of a lovely tomato. So, what you will need to do is get a small wire fence to safely enclose the garden.

For more information on growing this kind of vegetable garden, all you need to do is go to your local bookstore. In the Home and Garden sections you are sure to find books on the topic. You are sure to have a delicious vegetable garden with the proper research.
