Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent Liposuction Explained

Tumescent liposuction is a method of liposuction that involves the injection of a solution into the target area before surgery to make the tissues swell and become firm and easier to handle. Tumescent liposuction eliminates the use of general anesthesia thereby reducing potential risks. It is considered the safest liposuction procedure available today.

Other benefits of tumescent liposuction are:
* Faster recovery time
* Less cost (no hospital stay required)
* Minimal discomfort
* Reduced blood loss
* Reduced side effects such as bruising and skin discoloration

Tumescent liposuction safely removes excess fat from body areas such as the breast, abdomen, waist, hips, back, thighs, buttocks even the knees and legs including the face, neck and chin. It also effectively removes benign tumors of fat cells known as lipomas and excess fats from male breasts. It is also known to treat underarm over-sweating.

Before you undergo tumescent liposuction, the surgeon evaluates your health condition through a physical exam and by looking at your medical history. The surgeon explains the process of tumescent liposuction including what you can expect during and after surgery.

In tumescent liposuction procedure, the surgeon injects a large quantity of solution consisting of local anesthesia and other drugs into the area to be treated. This solution helps reduce the loss of blood and post-surgery bruising and pain. Then the surgeon cuts a small opening in the skin to allow the insertion of a tiny elastic tube called “cannula', which is attached to the suctioning device. The surgeon guides the cannula through the fatty layers to suck out all the unwanted fat from the target area.

After the procedure, the patient is usually able to get up and walk without any feeling of nausea. In fact walking right after the surgery is encouraged to aid blood circulation. In general, you will be able to drive and return to office work within a few days.

Make sure that a certified liposuction specialist, doctor or dermatologic surgeon with the training and experience in tumescent liposuction performs this procedure and that the surgery is done in a well-equipped facility or hospital.

Ideally, tumescent liposuction like any other liposuction methods is used to remove the stubborn fat in areas of the body that does not yield to regular exercise or healthy dieting. If you have toned muscles, elastic skin and not too overweight but you have certain areas in your body that are flabby despite exercise, then tumescent liposuction is perfect for you. Liposuction should not replace your exercise and diet regimen but should supplement it.
