The Dream World: The Realm Of The Sandman
Now available in ten trade paperback volumes, The Sandman lives on.
Running from 1988 to 1996 the Sandman, a 75 issue comic book series published by DC Comics' Vertigo line, came to shock and inspire the world with stories from the dream world.
Written by Neil Gaiman, the Sandman is hailed as one of the most defining comic books of the times, and is the only comic book to be awarded the World Fantasy Award. The dream world is put into comic book reality by Gaiman, a superstar fantasy writer, as he focuses on Morpheus, the King of Dreams, as well as his brothers and sisters, The Endless.
In the story, the Endless stand as personifications of the abstract concepts of Destiny, Destruction, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair and Delerium. Their stories, their trials and tribulations, are pretty much the focus of the title, giving readers a tableau of mind bending stories taking place in the dream world, as well as the realms of Destiny, Destruction, Death, Desire, Despair and Delirium, and with the real world itself. The title features "cameos" from real persons like William Shakespeare, Mark Twain and Emperor Norton, giving it an overall touch with reality and with the dream world, at the same time.
The Sandman is understandably one of the most respected comic books of its class, gaining this respect not only from within the realm of comics, but in the world of literature as well. It stands tall along with other comic book, and literary, greats such as Art Spiegelman's Maus, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Dave Gibbon and Alan Moore's The Watchmen.
Aiding Gaiman in putting the dream world into comic book reality are a number of European and American artists. The title differed from other comic books in the sense that it didn't have a "regular illustrator", giving the book a non-drastic ever changing visual aspect. The illustrations of Kelly Jones, Marc Hempel, Collen Doran, Michael Zulli, Mike Dringenberg and Dave McKean have graced the title's pages, making the successful transition from script to comic book pages.
The ten trade paperback volumes of the Sandman are divided as follows:
Preludes and Nocturnes (issues 1-8), The Doll's House (issues 9-16), Dream Country (issues 17-20), Season of Mists (issues 21-28), A Game of You (32-37), Fables and Reflections (issues 29-31, 38-40, 50), Brief Lives (issues 41-49), World's End (51-56), The Kindly Ones (issues 57-69), and The Wake (issues 70-75).
A masterpiece in itself, The Sandman is sure to make you appreciate the dream world of comics, and with what Gaiman has brought comic books to.
