Battles Have Been Fought And Won Over Herbs And Spices

Each country in the world has its own share of herbs and spices that in turn bear eloquent testimony to the culture and traditions of various societies and there have also been many battles fought and won over these precious commodities. In fact, they have also led to new voyages and bustling trade that in turn meant that countries that had a ready supply of herbs and spices were able to reap sizeable profits by selling these to other countries and it has often even led to influencing the lifestyles of people in different parts of the world.

It is also first of all important to understand just what herbs and spices are. Herbs are actually flowers and leaves that are derived from certain kind of plants (woody and low-growing) which don’t even have trunks; rather, these plants have many stems that grow out of the base. Some commonly known herbs are chives, parsley, thyme, marjoram, rosemary and oregano.

On the other hand, spices are derived from barks, roots, seeds as well as fruits of plants grown in tropical conditions and spices can also be derived from trees. Some of the most common spices known to man include ginger, cinnamon, cloves, mustard and black pepper. In addition, herbs and spices are also known to be available as mixtures and are very often also used to season blends of which curry powder and chili are good examples.

Many Uses

There are also many uses for herbs and spices and these uses include helping in making foods healthier. In this age and time when diseases related to poor diet are rife, it is important that you understand how herbs and spices can help you, especially as you can achieve better regulation of fat and sugar as well as salt by using the right kinds of herbs and spices.

Another major benefit to using herbs and spices is that they contain very little amount of calories as opposed to using dressings, trimmings, sauces, gravies as well as fried dishes. Herbs and spices are also useful in that they add to the flavor and taste of the food that you are consuming and they can give off very appealing aromas that add sensuality to the foods that you consume.

To store your herbs and spices, you may need to do a few things including buying the right kind of utensils. This in turn means that you need to be aware of how to go about seasoning your utensils. Once you have ground your herbs and spices, you can then store them in a cool part of your home so that the taste and aroma is not lost.
