There are a few important guitar lessons tips for tuning the guitar, one being to start with tuning the thickest string and then work your way down to the thinnest. The thinner a string is the higher sound it will give. The low E will hardly ever need to be tuned which is why it makes the best starting point. After the low E is the A string that you want to work on.

This is also known as the fifth string. After the low E you tune the A, then D, G, B and finally the high E which is the string at the very bottom. Once you have practiced tuning your guitar a few times and are good at starting from the low E string you can start by tuning the A first instead. Once you have gotten the hang of things and have a better ear for tuning your guitar, you can start using a more accurate method which is to start with the A string instead of the low E so that you can then go back and tune the low E back a perfect fourth.
