How To DJ: Tips To Build Beginner DJ Sets

As a beginner DJ, you may already be starting to think about building your own set. However, this can be quite complicated for beginners and setting up your own equipment can prove to be a daunting task, especially if you don’t have a clue about what you need and what you need to spend money on. If you are only planning to be a DJ as a hobby, then here are some tips that will help you set up your DJ equipments.

First of all, you need to determine how often you will be using your DJ equipments. You also need to know about your budget or how much you are willing to spend on DJ equipments. And, most importantly, you also have to know what kind of equipments you need.

For example, if you want to become an all purpose DJ, which means you want to be able to play music in clubs and other events that require music as a DJ and you only have less than a thousand dollars in your pocket, you will find that there are so many selections and prices for equipments that will meet your needs.

However, you have to keep in mind that nothing can compare to high end high quality equipments. If you plan on becoming a professional DJ playing in famous night clubs and discotheques, then you will only kid yourself if you do so with cheap gears or equipments. But, as a beginner who wants to be a DJ as a hobby, the cheaper variety is a good place to start.

For selecting your gear, you first need to make a list of the minimum gear you need to buy. Now, you have to remember your budget. If you don’t have a lot of cash to spend, you may want to refrain from buying turntables, such as the Numark TTX1 or the SL1200 MK2 by Technics. These are only for experts who earn a lot of cash DJing.

Just keep in mind that you should get a direct drive turntable instead of a belt driven turntable. Direct drive turntables offer the best torque for cueing tracks or records. The rule of thumb is that you may want to spend at least 300 dollars for direct drive turntables. At this price range, you will be able to get good quality turntables to learn how to DJ on.

You also need a mixer. A good quality mixer recommended for beginners who are on a tight budget would be one that can cost a hundred dollars or more. Once you get your mixer, try to break in your mixer slowly and explore all of its features in order to maximize your playing skills. When you learn about the features of the mixer you have, you will be able to experiment later on, which will help you develop your own unique style in DJing.

You will also need a pair of headphones. A mid range headphone can do the trick. It should have a closed ear design to avoid outside interference and it should also be light in weight to avoid straining your ear.

These are the basic equipments you need to start learning how to DJ. With the proper equipments, you will be well on your way to practice your skills in DJing and eventually provide your friends with music that they will truly love to dance and party with.
