The flute is one of the most soft large and small ensemble sounds. The sound of the flute can excite the imagination. It is one of the most basic of instruments, and many of which have derived from it.

Many people associate flute with various aspects of nature, such as grass, trees, and wildflowers blowing in the wind. Other people would view it as a romantic instrument. This instrument has most often thought of as a folk instrument. Many folk groups have had flutes in their ensembles, along with hand drums, clarinets, acoustical guitar, or mandolin.

There are different types of flutes. The regular flutes are the standard sized ones that most people have heard of and played. Both beginner and advanced models of the flute are available on the market. Most of the beginner models of flutes have closed-holed keys which cover the holes. In contrast, the more advanced models of flutes contain opened holed keys, which cover the holes of a flute when pressed down.

As far as the piccolos are concerned, some are made from solid metal and look exactly like a miniature flute while others have a contoured wooden head joint and/or a wooden body. Many of these piccolos also have white gold or copper springs in various places on the model. Other models of piccolos have a thinner head joint and wider body, while others have a wider head joint and a thinner body.

One model of piccolo is designed in the shape similar to that of a law enforcement nightstick. This one has no lip rest on it. This model is more cylindrical shaped rather than contoured like some of the other models, and the thickness of this model make it look less skeleton-like because the instrument's keys do not stand out as much as in the skinnier modeled piccolos-especially in the thinner silver models.
