Should Couples Be Allowed To Adopt Children Of Another Race?

When a couple adopts a child of another race it does indicate immediately that the child doesn't belong to them biologically. Many in society think children should be kept in their own race and even origin so that they can grow up to learn about their history. They often feel this is going to be lost when they are raised by a couple that is another race. Yet such adoptions are legal and they do occur on a regular basis.

In fact, the idea of adopting children of another race has become increasingly popular due to the availability of adoptions from another country. These couples do so in order to get a child that they will love and care for. They also feel good doing so because they are taking a child out of an environment where they aren't being cared for and often living in poverty. They don't feel that love has any divisions when it comes to race and they only see a child rather than the color of their skin.

Many couples though will tell you that adoption agencies tend to try to get them to adopt within their own race. Some black couples have seen the shock in the face of representatives when they tell them they are very willing to adopt a white baby or a white child. This shouldn't be such a shock though because when a couple wants to care for a child they will often do all they can to get one. If they choose a certain race and sex it can add years to the time frame they have to wait for one.

There have been plenty of studies out there that indicate children raised by parents of a different race can still have a very good life. This should be encouraging for those parents interested in giving such children a good home. Of course you do have those stories too where the children didn't feel that they belonged due to the color of their skin. Yet the number of these stories out there aren't very high. They aren't any higher than when you ask adopted children by the same race if they felt included or not in their family's life.

Should you decide to move forward with adopting a child of another race, you need to be prepared for what you are getting yourself involved with. While you may be very happy about it not everyone out there is going to be. Some people can be very cruel when it comes to such concerns, and they won't keep their opinions and thoughts about it to themselves. If you feel you can handle those types of situations though then you should pursue adopting a child regardless of their race.

If you find that adoption agencies aren't backing you up on this than continue to find one that will. Not all of them are biased in this area so be patient and don't limit your options. You can also look into open adoptions where you won't need to go through an adoption agency. However, you may find the same times of barriers going this route too. Many natural parents have a desire to see their child with the same race. Others aren't going to care though as long as they know their child is going to be with a loving family.
