International Adoptions

Things to consider in International adoptions

Are Angelina Jolie's international adoptions such an inspiration to you to adopt a child from a foreign country? International adoptions are also gaining popularity but are not new in the world of adoptions. There are many couples and single who want to adopt children from other countries because of a reduction in children put up for adoption. The inspiring fact is that these couples are aware they can provide a better future for these children.

How your government can help
Essentially, international adoptions are a private legal matter that is decided upon by a private individual and the foreign court, and is governed by the laws and regulations in a particular country. U.S. authorities have no jurisdiction over international adoptions and neither can they intervene on behalf of the adoptive parents and the courts operating in the country where adoption is taking place.

The State Department can, however, help you by providing extensive information about international adoptions happening in many countries; visa requirements for adopted children; make inquiries of the US consul based in each country with regards to the status of an adoption case as well as help in the clarification of other requirements and documentations; and ensure that US citizens are given fair trials according to the local laws pertaining to adoptions.

International adoptions may only differ slightly with respect to the adoption laws in certain countries, which prospective parents should first clarify with a legal counsel in a particular country. That's because the US State Department cannot be involved directly in the adoption process nor can it represent prospective parents in courts.

Building your family
The reduction in the number of adoptable children may eventually leave many adoptive American parents to seek international adoptions. You nay have been waiting for some time to have a child but for some reason are unable to. Don't allow the lack of adoptable children in the US hinder you from building a family.

International adoptions have made it possible for many couples to realize one of their biggest dreams, that is, to raise a child and build a family. International adoptions most usually are finalized in a child's country of origin so that as soon as the child is brought to your home he is now legally yours.

What couples need to decide on is what country they want the adopted child to come from, along with other factors such as culture so it will not be difficult for the adopted child to adjust.

International adoptions might just be your solution when it's personally impossible to have your own child.
