When you have an ant farm, there are several things that you must do in order to maintain a healthy and active ant farm. If you want to have active ants that are constantly busy at making elaborate tunnels, you must make sure that you properly feed and water your ants on a regular basis. Of course, knowing that you have to feed your ants is common knowledge, however, if you haven't ever owned an ant farm before it is difficult in knowing what type of food you should feed your ants. There are certain foods that you must never feed your ants, however, there are other types of food that will give your ants plenty of energy and nutrition to allow them to live a healthy and active life.

Whenever you are picking out foods for your ants that are several things that you must keep in mind, the first of these is to make sure that you never feed your ant anything sticky or mushy. This is incredibly important in order to have healthy ants. If you feed your ants these types of foods, you will quickly find that it is difficult for them to carry the food to the rest of the ant colony, and thus they will not receive the type of nutrition needed. Also, when feeding your ants it is very important that you designate an area that you put the food. By just simply tossing the food inside of the ant farm, you may not be able to easy take the food out if it begins to mold.

Since most ants within an ant farm are harvester ants, they require a very specific diet. A good rule of thumb when choosing what to feed your ants is to always ensure that the food is crunchy and solid. These types of food are easy for ants to break down and transfer back to the rest of the colony. When choosing foods it is always safe to stick with vegetables and certain types of fruits. Ants love fruit because of its naturally sugar flavor, however, too much fruit and you will not have a healthy commune of ants. The main source of their food should come from vegetables, mainly celery and lettuce.

By giving them these types of foods you are able to provide them with a balanced diet, which will fill the ants with energy.
The serving size of the food really depends on the size of your ant colony. If you have a smaller colony, of course, you will not have to feed them as much food as you would if you owned a huge ant colony. When determining the amount of food to give you ants, start off with a decent sized portion and see how much they eat. Make sure to watch the food and remove it is any mold begins to grow on it.

After you have done this one or two times, you will see the average amount of food it takes to successfully feed your ant colony. Then, only put that much food inside of your ant farm every couple of days.
