Mastiff Dogs

The adage on London's Cynographia Britannica about mastiff dogs is really an object of interest. In it, a certain Edwards, S. (1800) had written:

"What the Lion is to the Cat, the Mastiff is to the Dog, the noblest of the family; he stands alone, and all others are below him"

And I couldn't agree more. Indeed mastiff dogs are the greatest of all canines, considering all perspectives. That is why if ever you are considering for a family member addition, I couldn't recommend you any dog as strongly as I would with mastiff dogs.

What makes them so special? For size, many breeds of big dogs shares this same massive body structure with mastiff dogs, hardly making such trait special. Trainability, mastiff dogs are surprisingly stubborn, even if they were once used as cattle dogs, thus making it harder to make them job specialized like rottweilers. For temperament, this is where mastiff dogs shine as bright as Sirius.

The Temperament of Mastiff Dogs

Mastiff dogs are originally breed as herd-dogs or cattle-dogs, such is why they are naturally powerful, large, robust, and well muscled. They stand tall. Though there's no specific height or weight for mastiff dogs, they stand 25 – 35 inches tall at the withers and between 80 – 100 kg, depending on the mastiff breed. There have been exceptional cases, like an alpine mastiff St. Bernard who weigh as much as 152.5 kg named Benedictine, and the Guinness Record mastiff, Zorba, who stands at 37 inches and 143 kg. All these characteristics lend to a very nasty façade.

Contrary though, mastiff dogs are extremely tolerant, most especially to smaller beings like children and other pets. They are so gentle that you can also read the line:

"In a family, he (referring to an English mastiff) will permit the children to play with him and will suffer all their little pranks without offence"

Mastiff dogs are extremely loyal, and they get extremely attached to the family it had grown up with, especially with a family who has given adequate attention. The Nana of the Darling children (Peter Pan, Walt Disney), which is a St. Bernard, has sprinkles of truth in it. Mastiff dogs have very strong protective tendencies to its human family and would stand in front of a family member when it perceives a threat. It doesn't attack mind you, like rottweilers do. It just stands there, protecting and refusing to budge.

Nicknamed almost often as a gentle giant, other extremely gentle breeds aside from the ones already mentioned include the English Mastiff and Great Danes, and to lesser extent Boxers and Bulldogs.
