Fighting Dogs

Fighting Dogs: The Most Popular Breeds

In the early days, dogs were trained to fight. They were treated to perform fighting roles knowing that unlike the other animals, dogs have strong capabilities to adopt fighting behaviors easily and quickly. They were then sent to fight against other animals such as lions, tigers and bears, and were later considered to fight against each other. The concept of dog fighting then comes in.

Dog fighting was so common during the ancient times. However, with more moralists recognizing the level of cruelty involved in the game, dog fighting was considered a misdemeanor and was later banned. Those who were caught operating the game were sent to jail and were even required to pay certain amounts. Those who were left operating the game are now considered as one of the dangerous people on earth.

The dogs trained and used for fighting come in almost all breeds. They also come in sizes and age. But of the available breeds, the most commonly known fighting dogs are the following:

American Pit Bull Terrier

Also known by the name APBT, the American Pit Bull Terrier is one breed that belongs to pit bulls. They are considered as fighting dogs simply for their excellent loyalty and toughness. They are also fond to train for they themselves are fond for people. They are intelligent and very curious, making them a good pet for families. But, the APBTs have the tendency to display aggression towards other dogs, and this is what makes them a potential fighting breed.

Old English Bulldog

Another popular breed of fighting dogs is the Old English Bulldog. This breed is now deemed as one of the rarest breeds of dog and is noted specifically for its unique appearance. It has a broad and muscular body and with a height of about 16 inches. It is used for fighting, particular for bull fighting, mainly for its strong lower jaw which according to many is capable of handling a vice like grip.

Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a breed of robust working dog descended from a breed of Roman cattle dog which was introduced in Rottweil, Germany in the Middle Ages. It is considered as one of the best guard dogs as it barks and attacks unwanted intruders. It stands tall and can even put even a large man to the ground with its strong power. Of the fighting dogs, this is the most recognized and the most valued.

There are a lot more breeds of fighting dogs out there, but almost all of them are now used for security purposes. Some are used in the military forces, while others are just left guarding a home or a property.
