Effective Consciousness And Self Development The Simple Life

The road to self-fulfillment that will lead to an effective consciousness and self-development begins with that simple word: self. While it is something we use in everyday life that signifies a preoccupation with one’s identity, in fact that is not the focus of much of what we do. We are born for our parents, we go to school for an education, we fork for a living, and we raise a family for the propagation of the species and as the fulfillment of a tradition. It is seldom that we act, think or speak for the self.

If one truly thinks about it, what is the self? It is a thinking entity, capable of limitless potential in terms of imagination and reflection. The simplest things begin to achieve meaning beyond what is normally perceived. A flower (as corny as it may sound) can contain a whole universe of thought. The curling petals, the color of the stem and the leaf and the sepal, the smell (or lack of), they all contribute to a whole flower, a sum greater than all its parts.

So is the self. The self can be a daughter, a wife, an employee or business owner, a mother and a friend. These persons all exist in harmony within one self yet often we are conscious of a felling that something is missing. And that is the essential self.

What can define a person to a person’s own satisfaction? Do any of the titles bestowed by society have any real meaning? Yes, if one allows it to have meaning. A daughter is just one of a progeny, but when that daughter is a self-fulfilled daughter then she brings sunshine and light to the whole family by her mere presence.

A mother with a fierce pride in her children will encourage and nurture them to the point that they become self-fulfilled themselves. The wife who brings harmony and peace to a marriage will inspire a husband to be as self-fulfilled. A self-aware employee or business owner will bring this awareness to infect co-employees and clients with a sense of well-being and connectivity as well.

It all begins with self. How does one achieve the self? That is a very good question.
It is not a question of deep comprehension, of being and nothingness, of a place in the universe. It is a question of self-knowledge. How well does one get to know one’s self?
We are not talking of a favorite color, or a favorite book. We are talking of the quality of the color that makes it so attractive in the first place. Is it bright like yellow, or passionate like red? Is the book dark like a Stephen King novel or child-like such as Charlotte’s Web? Each quality is important in itself as a reflection of the self.

As a springboard for discussion, ask yourself the following questions:
Am I happy? Why
Is the work I do something I chose to do? If not, why am I doing it?
Do I perceive my family as incidental to being alive or a reflection of where I came from and where I am going?
Do I like what I see in the mirror? If not, what is it I see that I don’t like?
Is there any one thing about my life that I cannot do without? What? Why?
They say no man is an island. However, allowing the tide of life to wash over the island will also bury the essential island under a sea of incidentals. You must first establish the island, the self, before it can reach out, expand, and touch other islands in a meaningful way. Keep it simple. Keep to the essential self.
