Stress Management In The Workplace

Present day economic turmoil, mergers, bankruptcies, downsizing, and layoffs have cost jobs for countless workers. Moreover, numerous employees have been transferred to unfamiliar responsibilities within the company, making them wonder how long they will be kept employed. In addition to these pressures, some workers face the anxiety of new bosses, fewer retirement and health benefits, productivity surveillance, and the “feeling” that they need to work harder and longer to keep up with their present economic status.

These tensions and uncertainties are experienced by workers at all levels, and they become “stressful” situations that entertain the risks of physical illness, depression, marital strain, and other negative effects. Not to mention “declining” productivity and “burnout”, which affects both the individual (physically and mentally) and the workplace in terms of unmet efficiency and goals.

Stress in one’s place of work can actually be battled through proper stress management in the workplace. The key is controlling stress before it controls you. Although some companies may provide their employees with “stress management in the workplace” programs, an employee can reduce workplace stress in several ways. Here are some techniques for effective stress management in the workplace:

Defy Perfectionism
An employee should remember that no situation, decision, or project is ever perfect - by trying to do things perfectly puts undue stress on oneself. Set realistic and achievable goals, and avoid doing too much. The best approach is to do the best towards work, and one will do fine.

Clean Up Your Act
Proper time management with the things you need to get done and prioritizing them will lessen the stress of unmet deadlines. For those always running late, setting those watches and clocks fast to give you extra time is a way to battle “stressful-running-after-time”. Organize the workplace –a messy desk and not knowing where to find files adds up to stress. Make a plan for the day and stick to it.

Flip Negative Thinking
Thinking positively and not looking at the downside of things all the time will diminish draining oneself out of motivation and energy. “Pat yourself on the back” for accomplishments, even when others don’t.



Get time away, talk it out, and develop allies at work
If stress starts to build up, learn to take a breather –take a short stroll, sit on a quiet place, or meditate. Talking with someone trusted, “blowing off steam”, is sometimes the most excellent stress-reducer. Growing friends at work will reduce stress with someone ready to assist one in nerve-racking times.

These simple strategies of stress management in the workplace are great stress-reducers and will help a lot on how one can deal with workplace stress. After all, “a happy worker is a productive worker”.
