Local Schools Need You
Have some extra time to invest in the younger generation's future? The local schools can always use an extra smile around their hallways. Just give the secretary of any school a call, and she'll refer you to the volunteer coordinator.
Don't think you have any classroom skills? No problem! You could help by volunteering in the library. Shelving books, organizing files, checking student's books in or out, or just being there if a student has a question are all real needs. You never know how much your skills and talents can be utilized until you've talked face to face with a school librarian!
If you do feel comfortable going into the classroom and assisting, wonderful!
Teachers are overburdened with paperwork, and appreciate any time you can offer. Even if you just read a book to the class or tell some stories about when you were young – this allows them a chance to take a little break.
You could grade papers, help out with decorating the room or bulletin boards, tutor a child on reading or give a little quiz over spelling words. The teachers may be able to use your help with making copies and getting things ready for the following school day.
You could always spend time in the classrooms doing storytelling. The students of all ages love to hear stories of adventure or history. Especially fascinating are stories about the "olden days"! Show and tell day is always a good way to break the ice in a classroom.
The lunchroom could use some help too. Lunchtime can be a little frantic, and any additional organizational help is always appreciated!
Helping out at the local schools helps reduce some work for the teachers, while making some student's day! You really never know how much a simple pat on the back or word of appreciation can positively affect someone. So whether you go in for one day or spend a couple days a week there, just remember to wear your smile and keep your head held high. The children look up to you and you will leave a lasting impression on them.
