Carefully Choosing A Used Boat

There are many used boats for sale each day of a variety of different types, from motor boats to sail boats. Some of these boats are years old while others may have only been used the summer before and the owners can no longer afford to keep them. Whatever the case may be, buying a used boat takes patience, research and thoroughness so that the purchase is worth the money and will not cost an arm and a leg in repairs down the road. In some cases, it is a good idea to take an expert along when going to view the boat for the first time, especially if the used boat will be the first boat that an individual will have owned. In other cases, when the individual is experienced with boats, he will know what to look for and what to ask the owner when purchasing a used boat.

Tips

There are a couple of items that are useful to take along when going to view a used boat for the first time. Individuals should take a flashlight, a device to test the spark plugs, and a notepad for taking notes on what they see for negotiating purposes. It is also a good idea to bring a towel along so that the individual does not have to lie on the ground and get too dirty when inspecting the underside of the boat.

One of the first things that an individual should ask is how the boat is stored in the winter time and he should also view the way the boat is currently docked or sitting on the trailer. There are some used boat owners who do not take good care of their boats and do not have a cover for them to protect them from the weather. In addition, some individuals do not store the boats inside during the winter months and the boat usually will have more wear and tear because of it. Used boats that have been properly taken care of with a cover in the summer and are stored indoors in the winter are usually some of the best choices in the used boat market.

When viewing the boat, the individual should check to see if there are any cracks in the hull, any scratches, and any dents. These issues can sometimes lead to larger problems in the future as the crack or dent spreads and the new owner will have to take care of the repairs. The buyer is also wise to check what warrantees are still active on the used boat so that they can be prepared for any repairs that might have to come out of their own pocket in the future.
