What To Expect From A Boat Auction

Boat auctions are a lot more common – and a lot more popular – than most people realize. So why would people choose to use boat auctions instead of just buying one on their own and not dealing with any possibility of a hassle? Boats that are bought at auction usually are bought for a fraction of the price that they were originally purchased for, making them a great deal. It’s also common for people who can’t buy a boat directly from a dealer because of poor credit to try auction houses because many houses will finance boats to anyone. And boat auctions are one of the best places to find rare antique boats that are hard to come by – many boats end up at auctions because their owners pass away, giving others the chance to own them.

The auction process itself can differ from auction house to auction house, so some minor details might be different but in most cases, the process is very similar. Some auction houses insist that their bidders actually register with them so that they can keep track of who is bidding but others do not. Either way auctions then proceed and boats are put up for sale. Prospective buyers then bid on them and the one who bids the highest is the one who goes home with the boat.

The auctions themselves are usually very simple: a boat goes up for bid, bids are put up and the boat goes home with whoever bids the most. In almost all cases, whoever owned the boat before the auction is required to supply the boat auction house with the details of a boat’s history and proof of the boat’s condition. This ensures that the boat is not, first and foremost, stolen property and it helps to establish what a new owner can expect out of a boat, especially if it’s purchased with damage to it.

However, there are things you should do before you go to an auction. To avoid this, do your research; determine what you want in a boat, what you are planning to use it for and what type of boat will best suit your needs before you even start looking. Then, familiarize yourself with boats in general so that don’t end up going home with something you thought was perfect but turns out not to be. And most of all, don’t decide to settle – there will always be more boat auctions and chances are one will have just what you’re looking for.
