Boxing Training Basics

Each boxer has his own boxing training program that he adheres to. No two training programs should be alike, as each boxer has different strengths and weaknesses. A boxer should concentrate on training his weaknesses so that he will be more efficient in boxing with his opponent - and so that he will be effective in getting the win.

Depending on what the trainer sees fit for his boxer, so will the specific training approach follow. The main considerations in coming up with a boxing training program are speed, power, coordination, balance and stamina. All these are necessary so that the boxer will have better chances in defeating his opponent.

Concentrating only on one aspect will open up the boxer to weaknesses and can be taken advantage of by the opponent. Defeat is surely to come with a boxer who doesn't prepare as much as the other.

Speed

A boxing training program should incorporate exercises that would increase the speed of the boxer - either be it speed in punches, or in footwork. Without this, the boxer will be out-punched by the other and could let the opponent win by points. With blazing speed in punches, the boxer will also be able to come up with good combinations against the opponent.

Power

Speed without power is like driving a nail with the palm of your hands - you will not be effective. You hit the mark but with little or no result. With punching power, you are sure to hit your opponent with authority - making your nemesis think twice before coming in and hitting you with his punches.

Coordination

Without proper coordination, the boxer will less likely be able to take advantage of an opening and releasing punch combinations. The boxing training program should take into consideration this aspect, as this will be valuable for the boxer to properly connect blows and in defending himself inside the ring.

Balance

With balance, one is able to defend and give offense without risk of losing one's footing. With it, you'll be up and stable enough to trade blows with speed and full power. Training for balance will make the boxer be on his feet in proper form and stance to take on whatever attacks the opponent has in store for him.

Stamina

Having stamina means you can last the whole round without going out of breath. It means you still have more energy to go the many rounds left against your opponent and slug it out with him. It will be no use, even if you have all the arsenal in the world, if you don't have the energy to carry it through, you will eventually lose - not unless though, if you are very sure you can knock your opponent out early on. So to be safe, include this in your boxing training regimen.

Training for all of these will give you better chances in winning against the other boxers. But more importantly, you should have a technique to beat your opponent. Successful boxers don't just slug it out with the opponent - they have a strategy they follow in order to beat the other side. Relying solely on instinct would be too risky - an effective boxer must also use his mind.
