Common Types Of Camps

During vacation time, many kids go to summer camps. Summer camps offer kids the opportunity to have fun, go on adventures and interact with other kids and adults.

When a person hears the word summer camp, what comes first into his mind is an area full of cabins, fun activities, canoe trips and counselors. However, there are several types of camps that cater to different groups of kids. Each type offers a variety of choices based on a camper's interest and needs.

One of the most common types of camps is the day camp. Day camps are summer camps that are in operation during daytime only. They have a lot of programs that improve skills and interaction. Most day camps are operated by organizations such as YMCA. Some are also administered by the local government. Day camps can also include community based parks and recreation programs.

Another common type of camp is a residential camp. Most summer camps are actually residential camps. These are summer camps where campers may stay overnight. The duration of the stay varies in length of stay, ranging from two days and one night to more than a week.

There are also residential camps which serve campers with disabilities or special illness. These camps tend to let the kids stay for one or two weeks.

Another type of camp would be inclusive camps. Inclusive camps serve normal kids. In addition, they also house in children with disabilities. The programs in inclusive camps are designed to teach children with social acceptance, emphasizing that everyone has traits that make each one unique. The programs also provide a lot of opportunities for normal kids and those who have disabilities to interact freely. And like other summer camps, inclusive camps also provide kids the opportunity to have fun and to go on high adventure with each other.

The last type of camp is called a specialty camp. Specialty camps serve a specific type of population. For example, there are camps that provide accommodation and provide programs for children who are afflicted with Down Syndrome, Autism or cerebral palsy. There are also specialty camps which cater to children with cancer and a host of other life threatening diseases. The Hole In The Wall Gang Summer Camp is a perfect example of a specialty camp.

Specialty camp programs allow children to meet with others with similar disabilities or illnesses. Specialty camp counselors also teach and guide children to cope up with their illnesses or disabilities. Because of the nature of the camp, social inclusion is quite easy compared to the outside world.
