Not one to be adored for its beauty, an angler fish is quite infamous for its rather grotesque appearance. Featuring a rounded body that looks like it could easily swallow up a regular sized ball large mouth and sharp fangs, it is not surprising to have earned the name " the common black devil". However, despite its somewhat ferocious appearance, according to the recorded facts on angler fish, it only reaches the maximum of five inches in body length. Its name is actually derived from its long dorsal spine with a lighted tip attached on the fish's head that is often used as a natural lure for their preys, thus considered analogous to the art of fish angling. Its lighted bait or organ called photophore flashes on and off and waves back and forth much like that of a regular fishing pole so when its prey gets close enough, it simply snaps it up with its powerful jaw and proceeds to enjoy its sumptuous meal without much effort.

The male angler has hook teeth that is often used to attached to the female angler, joining its blood vessels and possibly spend the rest of its life as a parasite, mainly getting its nourishment straight from the female's body. However, if the male will be unable to attach to a female, there's a greater likelihood that it will eventually die of starvation.
