Fly Fishing Tackle Fly Fishing Tackle Box

A Guide to Buying Fly Fishing Tackle Box

You may think that choosing a fly fishing tackle box is not that hard. After all, a box is a box is a box, right? But in fact there are a number of factors you need to take into account. This article is designed to help you select the perfect fly fishing tackle box.

Size Does Matter

The size of your fly fishing tackle box is the first thing you need to consider. It can be a chore lugging around a large, heavy box if you only have a handful of different flies that you use. On the other hand, it is no use expecting a fly fishing tackle box to act like Doctor Who's TARDIS and hold hundreds of different flies in a tiny space. Make a count of the number of different flies that you need to carry and how many you plan to buy in the near future and make sure you select a box with at least the capacity to hold your current collection of flies, plus a little more to allow for future expansion.

Hard or Soft Cases?

Fly fishing tackle boxes can be either hard, for extra durability, or soft, for flexibility. Hard cases are much heavier than soft ones, but offer better protection against the elements. Newer boxes are worm proofed to a much greater degree than older models, which is worth remembering when considering that stylish brass and cherry wood box to hold your vintage fly fishing tackle, if that's where your interests lie.

Soft fly fishing tackle boxes, sometimes referred to as tackle bags or tackle sacks, are normally used in conjunction with plastic boxes to arrange fly fishing equipment for easy access. Sometimes, a tackle binder, similar to a schoolchild's trapper keeper, can also be used to store equipment.

Attachable Fly Fishing Tackle Boxes

If you always fish from the same boat, you can buy attachable fly fishing tackle boxes that you can affix to the side of the boat, so that you don't need to carry the box back and forth with you every time you go fishing. These contain anywhere between three and eleven separate compartments, and can be customized with waterproof and weatherproof decals that express your personality and interests. Never again will you have to worry about whether you forgot the exact fly you need in order to catch the fish that are biting today. Everything you need will be right there with you on your boat, every time.
